GOOD BEER IS EASY TO MAKE. GREAT BEER IS AN ART.
Brewmaster Rick Boucke is driven entirely by his creative side, a desire to relentlessly craft new recipes and beers. He was born and raised in Amsterdam, just across the canal from the original Heineken Brewery, where every day he would breathe and relish the rich aromas of hops and barley brewing. So it stands to reason Rick would eventually pursue a career dedicated to the creation of his own versions the worlds most celebrated alcoholic beverage.
Rick began developing his brewing skills as a professional in 2004 at Sequoia Brewing Company in Fresno, initially under the tutelage of Tioga-Sequoia Brewmaster Kevin Cox. In 2010 he was appointed Brewmaster. Seeking a more creative brewing environment, Rick moved to Oakhurst in 2013 as Brewmaster at a new brewpub – South Gate Brewing Company.
Rick is a firm believer that “ideas are born and fermented.” His love of craft beer keeps him immersed in the California brewing community while continuing to develop new flavor combinations and break new ground in his ever evolving journey. He brews an array of traditional ales and lagers but IPA’s are his all-time passion.
To date, Rick Boucke has earned 2 gold international medals (San Diego & Los Angeles) and 14 national awards for his creations, in addition to creating a number of house beers for establishments such as China Peak ski resort and Yosemite’s well-know Tenaya Lodge. Under Rick’s hands-on guidance and brewhouse leadership, South Gate offers around 6-8 new beers annually while maintaining a wide range of core house styles.
